Hida Shunkei (飛騨春慶) is a traditional Japanese lacquer method originating in the city of Takayama, Gifu Prefecture (close to where the famous straw farm houses, gasshouzukuri, are found). Transparent lacquer layers is used on yellow or red stained wood to showcase the natural wood grain. However, the beauty is determined by the transparent lacquer mixture, which is fiercely guarded by individual makers. Therefore, each piece of Shunkei Lacquer is unique.
