This lovely small plate from the Meiji Era features Kutani-yaki’s characteristic striking use of color and focus on the beauty of nature.

Depicts 5 meticulously hand painted Tsuru (crane) in a dramatic moment of flight, with gold flecked accents. Tsuru were traditionally considered a sacred bird in Japan, as their piercing cry was said to reach the heavens, connecting humans with gods. They symbolize longevity based on the Japanese saying that tsuru live for 1000 years.

This size plate (mamezara) is traditionally used to for serving soy sauce for sushi, garnishes for soba, or for serving snacks for drinking.

  • As this is a handmade antique item, there are some minor imperfections, but otherwise in great condition.
