This beautiful Imari-yaki small plate from the Edo Era is in the Nishiki, or “brocade”-style of porcelain, characterized by the use of many colors of paint over the white glaze. This particular kozara or small plate, features breathtaking hand-painted designs in red, green, yellow, black and gold, in addition to the classic blue. Scalloped edges add even more character.

In the center of the dish in cobalt blue are a design of plum blossoms, pine and bamboo trees—an auspicious combination called Shochikubai that symbolizes longevity (pine/ sho), vitality (bamboo chiku), and beauty (plum bai).

With all its auspicious symbols, this little plate is perfect as a celebratory present or as a good-luck gift for yourself! Use as a small dish to serve sauce, single serving of chocolate/snacks, or to hold jewelry and other precious small items.
