This shallow bowl from the Edo Era features the Sometsuke (“blue and white porcelain") technique that is reminiscent of indigo-dyed fabric. The subjects of this plate are the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, a group of Chinese scholars, writers, and musicians of the third century CE who escaped political upheaval and enjoyed a rural life, and whose life inspired many artists.
