The ukiyoe print of the Actor Otani Oniji III as Edobe (sandaime ootani oniji no yakko edobe) is considered to be a masterpiece. Displayed in its entirety on this 48 cm cotton furoshiki, the composition showcases the actor Otani Oniji III playing the role of a yakko edobe, servants that were dispatched to do samurai’s dirty deeds. The actor’s grasping hands and severe expression captures the moment perfectly. This piece was originally created by the master ukiyo-e artist Sharaku. He was famous for creating prints that gave a rare glimpse into the world of kabuki theater, along with the personalities of the kabuki actors!
