These unique handmade artisan bowls are a true treasure. Made by a third generation artisan using techniques handed down through generations, the bowls encapsulate traditional techniques that are brought into the present age. The artists use the potters wheel to shave the wood down into their preferred form using a technique called rokuro hiki (轆轤挽き), which enables extreme control and detail to be used when crafting the bowl. Continuously developing new ideas via learning from the past, each bowl is imbued with precise craftsmanship.
These handmade bowls are truly unique, being made out of lacquered keyaki (Zelkova, an elm like tree native to Japan) wood. This rare wood is often used in traditional Japanese furniture, and is highly prized in Japan. The artists employ the highly prized rokuro hiki technique to imbue the precious keyaki wood with meticulous techniques that have been passed down through generations.
