Chef Bento Grand Prize Winner and Runners-up Annouced!
After many hours of reviewing amazing submissions from across the globe, we are very please to announce that the Grand Prize Winners of the 2020 Chef Bento Contest are....
International: Annica P. from Germany 🇩🇪
Japan: Yuko K. from Fukuoka 🇯🇵
Annica chose to make a rainbow sandwich bento, as the rainbow symbolizes hope during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. The finely layered bento includes a hummus and spicy blue cauliflower sandwich, an egg salad sandwich and a ‘German Leberkäse’ sausage sandwich -all with 'lots of fresh vegetables to stay healthy while we stay at home'.
Yuko made a bento that reminds her of spring to lift spirits during a difficult time. Ornate onigiri rice balls are served with grilled salmon, fried sesame pork, coleslaw, sliced grapes and many other colorful, carefully arranged sides!
Congratulations to Annica on winning a roundtrip flight to Japan, and to Yuko for winning a domestic travel voucher!
As with every year, we received hundreds of beautiful submissions from all around the world. It is clear that everyone worked extremely hard to transform their favorite 'stay at home' foods into a beautiful bento meal, and we can't wait to share some of our favorites with everyone on social media over the coming weeks.

"As my country is currently in lockdown, I can't go shopping every day and I have decided to use some risotto leftovers and everything available in my fridge and in my garden to make this colourful and vibrant bento."

"We love shepherd’s pie in autumn, and it is a perfect meal for a cold night inside. The little lamb pie is filled with lamb mince, carrots, onion, celery, and gravy topped with mashed potato, beetroot coloured mash potato, rolled egg for the horns, toasted almonds for ears, and nori for the face ... I made sure to include foods I already had in my pantry, fridge, and freezer."

"I stocked these ingredients because they keep well! Made patties from frozen turkey to bread/fry. I don't buy leafy greens, because I don't eat them fast enough- so broccoli is my mainstay greenery. Dill and thai basil come from my container garden. Crafting has been keeping me busy at home. Lately, I have been inspired by tonbo-dama designs. I layered my rice with furikake and nori cut-outs to mimic that."

"One of my son's favorite recipes is Bo Bun. Simple, balanced, quick to make and can be eaten cold- so ideal for bento. Under a bed of vermicelli, all these colors (carrots, cucumber, mint, beef and spring rolls) inspired me in this spring season (cherry blossom in radishes for decoration)."

"Stay home bento menu is specially curated with daily fresh ingredients of Yong tau foo. Yong Tau foo is popular among Malaysians. It’s a traditional Hakka Chinese cuisine filled with ground meat mixture or fish paste. Aside Rapunzel was made from omelette, steam ham, cheese and seaweed. If Rapunzel can entertain herself in her tower for 18 years, I think we can handle being in quarantine for a few weeks or a few months. Let’s stay home and stay positive always!"
