18,000 JPY

The Shiroki box is a truly exceptional large box. Handcrafted out of untreated pale wood (shiroki), it is a work of the finest Japanese craftmanship.

Size XL.

In Japan, this type of square, stacking box is used during the New Year holiday season, for presenting osechi - a selection of carefully prepared delicacies, each with some lucky significance. (Wikipedia.) It can also be used for presenting sushi at a party, or anything that strikes your imagination. The Shiroki box is so special, you may want to just have it out on display all the time. It is created by skilled artisans in Yamanaka, a town in Ishikawa prefecture has been renowned for its fine lacquerware for 450 years, using methods that were developed during the Edo period.

The Shiroki box is made up of two layers. It is made from two types of straight grain wood: Tama (a type of Japanese cedar) and Nara (another type of Japanese wood). The corners of the two layers are precisely dovetailed. The inside is hand finished in bright red natural lacquer, which not only protects the wood from food placed within, but also provides a discreet flash of color that is only visible when the box is opened. This is a very Japanese kind of aesthetic.

Dimensions: 19 cm (7.48") square and 13 cm (5.12") high.

Packaged in a beautiful presentation box, this would make a very special gift for a lucky person.
